What is sync?
Your song in a film, series or advert.
Sync is short for synchronisation and means music is combined with pictures. So your song in a film, series, game or advert.
Two permissions
The company needs two permissions: from the label for the recording and from the publisher for the song. If you are independent and wrote and recorded everything yourself, you can grant both at once. That makes you especially attractive to film people.
How you earn from it
- Usually there is a one-off payment, the sync fee.
- If the film or advert runs on TV, extra money comes in through GEMA.
All figures are rough guidelines for beginners and focus on Germany. They are no substitute for legal or tax advice.
