What is a split sheet?

Three of you write a song. Who owns what?

As soon as several people write a song together, the question comes up: who owns how much? That is exactly what a split sheet settles.

What goes on it

  • Song title and date of the session
  • Everyone involved with full name, artist name and GEMA membership (if any)
  • Who owns what percentage of music and lyrics, adding up to 100 percent
  • Everyone's signature

When and why

Fill it in right after the session, while everyone still remembers who contributed what. You'll use these percentages later to register the song with GEMA. People who only talk about shares after the hit usually end up arguing.

In shortSplit sheet first, then release. Saves a lot of arguments.

All figures are rough guidelines for beginners and focus on Germany. They are no substitute for legal or tax advice.
