What does a manager do, and when do you need one?

The managing director of your career, but only once something is happening.

A manager is basically the managing director of your career.

  • They plan the strategy with you: which song, which album, which tour, and when?
  • They negotiate your deals with labels, publishers and brands.
  • They keep your team together: label, booking, lawyer and producer.
  • Their most important tool is their network. They open doors for you.

What they earn

Usually 15 to 20 percent of your income. So they only earn when you earn. Check the contract carefully: how long does it run, and which income do they get a cut of?

When?

Twenty percent of nothing is nothing. That's why a good manager rarely comes in right at the start. They look for artists where something is already happening: first fans, growing streams, show requests. A good sign: you have more business work than time for music.

Until then, manage yourself. That's how you learn the business and later recognise a good manager.

In shortA manager amplifies what's already working. They don't start it.

All figures are rough guidelines for beginners and focus on Germany. They are no substitute for legal or tax advice.
