How do you get onto Spotify playlists?

Editors, algorithm and curators: three ways into a playlist.

There are three kinds of playlists, and a different way into each.

1. Editorial playlists

Spotify's own team puts these together. You pitch an unreleased song via Spotify for Artists, at least seven days before release, better earlier.

2. Algorithmic playlists

For example Release Radar or Discover Weekly. They're different for every listener. The algorithm watches whether people save your song, listen to the end and play it again.

3. Playlists by fans, blogs and curators

You can write to them directly: short, friendly and personal.

Never buy playlist spots. Fake streams can get your song removed.

Your fans matter most: get them to save the song and add it to their own playlists. And release regularly.

In shortPitch early, activate fans, write to curators. And never buy streams.

All figures are rough guidelines for beginners and focus on Germany. They are no substitute for legal or tax advice.
